Warm Water in Winter- February 2013

Now that the weather has gotten colder with nights dipping below freezing and many mornings of frost and ice one of the best things you can do for your horses and other livestock is to offer them clean, warm water to drink. It has been known for some time that these animals will drink more if the water offered to them is warm.

Just think about the times you have taken an ice-cold drink and it’s made your teeth ache. The same thing can happen to the animals and it might even cause them to consume less water than they should. This can lead to other problems as well.
An easy way to supply warm water is to simply take a thermos of the hottest water you can run in your house out to the barn and add it to the bucket of cold water in the stall. Another thing to do would be to put a tank heater in the water trough. This may not make the water as warm, but it will keep it from freezing and may encourage more consumption.
